The area of consideration for this vacancy announcement is for U.S. Citizens and Non-Citizens within the Local Commuting Area of Fort Drum, NY. This includes the counties of: St. Lawrence, Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis. (Military Spouse Preference (MSP) moving to the area within 30 days from the closing date of this announcement and Involuntarily Separated Military Preference (ISMP) Preference eligible candidates are included in the area of consideration.)

This position is located at Youth Sports within the Child, Youth, & School Services Division.

Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division (LI), is located in northern New York's picturesque North Country, one of the most historically unique and geographically beautiful areas of the United States, offering many outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types. Fort Drum is approximately 30 miles south of the Canadian border, 85 miles north of Syracuse, and 350 miles north of New York City. It is located with the Great Lakes to the west, the Adirondack Mountains to the east, and the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands in between.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the delivery of a wide range of installation youth fitness, health, and outreach programs in multiple CYS settings
  • Develops and maintains and partnerships with schools and community organizations to enhance CYS fitness and health programs
  • Within an existing curriculum, develops and implements lesson plans and appropriate environments that incorporate a broad range of fitness and health activities for early childhood, school age, and youth program participants
  • Maintains control of and accountability for all attending children and youth
  • Assists in training coaches using the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) guidelines

  • Must possess and maintain the physical ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs, walk, bend, stoop, and stand on a routine basis
  • Must obtain/maintain certification in CPR/First Aid
  • Must possess a nationally recognized fitness certification (i.e., National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), National Aerobics and Fitness Trainers Association (NAFTA), etc.)
Qualifications

Qualified candidates will possess all of the following: * A bachelor's degree or higher in exercise physiology, exercise science, kinesiology, physical education, or other fitness-related disciplines (TRANSCRIPTS MUST BE UPLOADED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION) OR * Possess ALL of the following: * Experience in the application of fitness principles, concepts, and techniques gained through the delivery of a comprehensive group fitness, program; AND * Experience or education demonstrating the knowledge of basic health and nutrition concepts; AND * Experience training coaches or other professionals (i.e. teachers, caregivers, fitness instructors) in the proper application of sports of fitness techniques HIGHLY PREFERRED are those candidates that possess either ot the minimum qualifications above AND: * experience in the planning, evaluation, or delivery of a fitness program or curriculum specifically for children or youth OR * Possess at least 12 semester hours in college coursework directly related to children or youth (i.e., PE for children, motor skills development, childhood development, early/elementary/secondary education, health/nutrition for children, child/adolescent psychology, etc.). PLEASE NOTE: Your resume & application package must reflect the qualifications stated in the announcement and questionnaire to be rated eligible. You must also include the Highly Preferred criteria in your resume, if applicable.

  • Salary depends on actual hours worked. Hourly rate for leave and pay will be $19.02 to $19.98 per hour.
